SERVICEMAN (1) (1946 - 1969)
O.N. 180448. 325g. 116.0 x 27.6 x 12.7 feet.
As built: T.3-cyl. (12", 20” & 33" x 24") engine by Franklin Machine and Foundry Corporation, Providence, Rhode Island, U.S.A. 750ihp.
From 1946: T.3-cyl. (11¾", 19¾” & 34" x 24") engine by A. Hall & Company Ltd., Aberdeen (originally destined for the cancelled EMPIRE KEITH). 750ihp.
From 1961: 6-cyl. 2 S.C.S.A. (340 x 570mm) engine by British Polar Engines Ltd., Glasgow. 2,000bhp.
16.3.1945: Launched as EMPIRE STELLA by Cochrane & Sons Ltd., Selby (Yard No.1298) for the Ministry of War Transport.
17.8.1945: Completed and handed over to Peder & Mylchreest Ltd., London for onward delivery.
1945: William Watkins Ltd., London appointed as managers.
1.1.1946: Sustained serious engine and boiler damage following an explosion caused when
lubricating oil entered the boiler. Laid up in her damaged state at Hull.
17.5.1946: Purchased for £15,000 by United Towing Company Ltd., Hull, re-engined and renamed SERVICEMAN (the request to rename her CRAFTSMAN was rejected by the Register General of Shipping due to it being a reserved name).
1961: Re-engined.
1969: Sold to Rimorchiatori Sardi SpA, Italy, and renamed POETTO.
11.2010: Believed still existence
