KROOMAN (2) (1938 - 1973)
O.N. 165695. 230g. 2n. 100.1 x 25.1 x 12.8 feet.
T.3-cyl. (14¾", 25” & 41" x 27") engine by Charles D. Holmes & Company Ltd., Hull. 120nhp. 850ihp.
Post 1965: 12-cyl. 2 S.C. S.A. (220 x 380mm) engine by the Drypool Engineering and Dry Dock Company Ltd., Hull. 1,125bhp.
23.10.1937: Launched by Cochrane & Sons Ltd., Selby (Yard No. 1193) for the United Towing Company Ltd., Hull.
2.1938: Completed.
25.8.1939: Requisitioned by the Admiralty, based at Rosyth.
4.1945: Towed two barges from Boston to Flushing.
13.41945: Allocated to relieve EMPIRE HUMPHREY at Boulogne.
5.1945: Towed MFVs ERLING and INDUSTRY from Portsmouth to Aberdeen and Buckie.
6.1945: Towed trawler SOUTHCOTES from Leith to Hull.
8.1945: Returned to owners.
29-30.6.1963: Sank at her moorings in 35 feet of water, at No. 4 Quay, King George V Dock, Hull during the night. Lincoln & Hull Water Transport Company Ltd. awarded the salvage contract. It was decided that six 200-ton lifting barges would be employed using 6" lifting hawsers to raise the casualty.
23.7.1963: The first attempt was aborted as vessel had settled in 9 feet of mud.
29.7.1963: A 7th barge was engaged in an unsuccessful attempt to break the suction of the mud.
6.8.1963: J. Parker, the Salvage Master, engaged the services of a dredger to remove a percentage of the mud.
9.8.1963: It was stated that the operation had so far cost £3,000. A further two lifting barges were brought in to assist with the lift.
28.8.1963: Lifting commenced and by 02:00hrs on 29th she had been raised and pumped out although
retaining a list.
31.8.1963: Dry docked in the Alexandra Dock for survey to ascertain the reason for her sinking, subsequently repaired, and returned to service.
1965: Converted into a motorship 214g.
21.1.1970: Owners restyled as United Towing Ltd.
9.5.1973: Sold to Maritime Commercial Enterprises Ltd., Piraeus and renamed JASON.
1983: Sold to Alexander G. Tsavliris & Sons Maritime Company, Piraeus.
2.1987: Demolished by Aristotelis Angelikas Company at Perama.
