Hello from MacUalraig

Congratulations on producing a great site. I came across you when looking for some material for a post I'm working on for one of my blogs about the old Anchor-Donaldson Line. I'm also researching the history of SS Shieldhall and was interested to see the early history of William Simons. Shieldhall is now on the Solent where her friends are trying to raise £80,000 to keep her going. Members here may find something of interest on my blogs, which are:- http://www.scottishboating.blogspot.com and http://www.scottishislandsclass.blogspot.com.

Best wishes to All

Hello Ewan,
Welcome to the site, interesting blogs especially Dorian Thom the Glasgow aviator. There was a very similar gentleman in Oz, Bert Hinkler , also born 1892 Bundaberg, Qld. worth a Google. He also joined the RFC and won the DFC. He ended up working for Roe in Southampton but was unfortunately killed in Italian mountains on solo flight back to Oz in I think 1929. He was given a hero's burial in Italy by the Italian Fascist's. His house near Southampton was shipped brick by brick back to Bundaberg in two 20 foot containers and rebuilt as a museum.
