It was common practice for these steam tugs to assist sailing vessels in and out of harbours and estuaries especially in inclement weather or when the wind was subdued. This was invariably a straightforward evolution well practised by the 19th Century seaman.

The 160 ton schooner Wonder, of Fowey, on 56023 built in Padstow 1866 was one such. Owned by James G. Philp, Church Street, Mevagissey, Cornwall she had need of a tugs assistance whilst leaving the Seine for sea. Abeille No 8 duly took Wonder in her charge and despite the abilities of all in both vessels lost the tow which left the sail vessel at the winds mercy and she was duly wrecked, a total loss.

Abeille No 8 was able to rescue all in Wonder that dark winters evening of 8th February 1897.
